Caramels

1 cup butter or margarine
1 package (16 oz.) brown sugar
Dash salt
1 c. Light corn syrup
1 can (14 oz.) sweetened, condensed milk
1 tsp. Vanilla


Butter a 9x9x2 inch pan; set aside. Melt the 1 cup butter or margarine in a heavy 3-quart saucepan. Add sugar and salt; stir thoroughly. Stir in corn syrup and gradually add the sweetened condensed milk, stirring constantly. Clip candy thermometer to side of pan. Cook and stir over medium heat to 245⁰. This will take 12-15 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Pour into a buttered pan. When cooled, cut into squares.
