1 ½ cups soft bread crumbs
¾ cup milk
3 tablespoons finely chopped onion
4 tablespoons butter
1 pound ground beef
1 teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1 egg, slightly beaten
¼ cup flour
1 cup beef stock or cream
Flour and water to thicken
Soak breadcrumbs in milk. Sauté onions in 2 tablespoons of the butter until soft; add to breadcrumbs. Stir in beef, seasonings and egg. Form into balls about 1 inch in diameter; roll in flour; sauté in remaining 2 tablespoons of butter for about 10 minutes or until lightly browned. Add stock or cream; cover, simmer gently 5 minutes. Remove meatballs to serving dish. Thicken the gravy with 1 to 1 ½ tablespoons flour blended with an equal amount of water. Pour over meatballs.
